[Bank of Japan Official Signals Rate Hike, Yen Strengthens but Gains Limited] The yen strengthened slightly on Wednesday, with the dollar/yen pair retreating from a two-week high of 158.51 to around 158. Market expectations for further monetary tightening by the Bank of Japan (BOJ) rose after hawkish comments from BOJ official Ayano Sato. However, the overall strength of the dollar and rising oil prices limited the yen's gains. Sato, previously a dovish figure and one of the two members who opposed a rate hike in September, surprised the market by signaling support for further tightening in an interview with Kyodo News on Wednesday. She expressed support for the BOJ's "gradual adjustment" of monetary policy and believed that rate hikes "would help achieve sustainable economic growth." These comments initially boosted the yen, but the dollar/yen pair's decline has been relatively limited. Investors remain reluctant to sell the dollar heavily ahead of the latest Federal Reserve monetary policy meeting results, while rising oil prices are also putting pressure on oil-importing countries like Japan.
